an angel by our side

earlier today, i had the scariest time of my life and just thinking about it still makes me shudder. my brother and i only get to really spend time w/ each other during weekends. so even before he got married, it was an unwritten rule for us to hang out w/ each other during weekends. a trip to the mall, an occasional movie and now that my sister-in-law is expecting, a trip to her obstetrician.

we left the house before 9 am to make it to the doctor's appointment at 10 am. we even had baon to eat inside the car on the way to the hospital. everything went smoothly and we excitedly went home with the knowledge that we will be seeing baby tricia (as we fondly call the baby) in about 4 weeks time (with God's grace). we were excitedly chattering about our elementary days ala "ah wala kayo sa lolo ko..." and who would baby tricia look like when there was a sudden screech of brakes and i was thrown forward from the backseat as we were about to cross a major intersection.

a west-bound 6 wheeler truck, whose driver i think may not have been paying so much attention to the road (because he may have been playing around w/ his buddies) was coming to us very fast while cars on the opposite lane were slowly crossing the same intersection. just at the nick of time, the truck driver braked. the truck narrowly missed the other car and our pick-up truck. if he saw us a minute later or if his brakes malfunctioned, all four of us including baby tricia and the other occupants of the other car may have been knocking on heaven's door (i hope its heaven) by now. it was like slow motion, my brother saw the truck coming but there was no way out since cars were everywhere. later he said, he was just waiting for the impact. the driver didn't even look like he was sorry for the near accident because he was laughing when my brother reprimanded him.

when we got home, i asked my parents to hug us then recounted the incident to them. my father was so mad, he said he would kill the driver if something happenned to all of us. perhaps in our gratefulness that nothing happenned, we didn't even remember to get the truck's plate number so that we can report the driver to the proper authorities for reckless driving.

thank God our angels were intently watching over us...
